Introduction

  • The liver is the largest organ with a weight of about 1.5 kg.

  • It is a reddish brown organ with four lobes of unequal size and shape.

  • Liver cells (hepatocytes) are arranged in the form of lobes or glands and receive blood supply via hepatic artery.

  • The other blood vessel known as portal vein carries blood from digestive tract containing digested and absorbed food from small intestine.

  • The blood from portal vein is filtered through hepatocytes where toxic substances like heavy metals, chemicals and micro-organisms are removed and destroyed.

  • This action requires production of large quantities of antitoxin substances and antioxidant enzymes.
